Gesigneerd exemplaar! Vier jaar nadat Barry Hay besloot een nieuw project op te starten, is het op 13 mei dan zover: het debuutalbum van zijn Flying V Formation. Je zou kunnen zeggen dat het lang heeft geduurd, maar niets is minder waar als je weet dat deze formatie bestaat uit DeWolff-gitarist Pablo van de Poel en de succesvolle, jonge muzikanten Jan Rooymans, Daim de Rijke en Huub van Loon. Om maar te zwijgen over alle activiteiten van Barry Hay als voorman van Nederlands meest legendarische rockband Golden Earring. Een aantal nummers was er al en is sinds 2012 talloze malen live gespeeld. De wens om deze en nieuwe composities op te nemen bestond al langer, maar het viel niet mee om alle agenda's op elkaar af stemmen. In de zomer van 2015 was het moment eindelijk daar. Met Di-rect bassist Bas van Wageningen als co-producent ging Barry Hay"s Flying V Formation de Basement Studio in Den Haag in. Onder aanvoering van Barry Hay heeft de Flying V Formation de rauwe live-energie perfect weten te vangen op een coherent en onvervalst rock & roll album. Luister maar eens naar het openingsnummer Wait A Minute, waar direct de toon mee wordt gezet, of het heerlijk slepende I"m Not Drowning (een cover van een onbekend akoestisch nummer van Steve Winwood), pure rocktracks als The Machine en Turn Around en het messcherpe Razorblade. Rustmomenten zijn er ook in de vorm van een cover van het Rickie Lee Jones nummer Circle In The Sand en het prachtig beschouwende, bijna zes minuten durende sluitstuk Beautiful Life. Om maar eens te onderstrepen dat Barry Hay"s Flying V Formation een echte live-band is, bevat de CD versie van het acht nummers tellende album als bonus de twee live-tracks Firewater (bekend in het origineel van Micheal Smotherman) en de Tom Waits cover Going Out West. Beiden zijn in oktober 2012 in het Paard van Troje in Den Haag opgenomen. Over de Flying V Formation zegt Barry Hay: "De Earring is mijn hart, maar dit is lachen! We are going to blow you away!
