Murder of the Universe van King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard is een conceptalbum binnen het psychedelische rockgenre, uitgebracht als langspeler in hun productieve periode. Het album is opgezet als een verhalende trip met drie aparte hoofdstukken, ieder doorspekt met een overvloed aan spoken word passages die de narratieve structuur versterken.

Het geluid is ruw, met intens vervormde gitaren en haast maniakale percussie, wat bijdraagt aan een chaotische sfeer die perfect aansluit bij het drama van de verhalen. De muziek is typisch voor de band: grillig, energiek en zwanger van experimenten. De band benut verschillende instrumenten en productie-elementen, waardoor het geheel als een auditieve rollercoaster aanvoelt.

De verhaallijnen wortelen diep in sciencefictionthema’s en groteske fantasie, waarbij existentiële dilemma’s en veranderde werkelijkheden centraal staan. Elk hoofdstuk wordt ondersteund door unieke vertelstemmen, variërend van menselijke narratie tot digitale spraaksynthese, wat het geheel een dystopisch karakter geeft.
